The tournament will be held, for the first time, on a new court surface, adding to the intrigue of the fierce competition synonymous of this illustrious event.

Renowned for soaring on-court temperatures of up to 50 degrees centigrade, the tournament attracts the top-ranked Australian Open 2008 women's singles players in the world.

The event will take place at Melbourne Park, the only tennis venue, at the moment, with a retractable roof. Centre Court at Wimbledon will be the other venue offering indoor Grand Slam tennis when the roof is completed by the 2009 tournament.

The Australian Open 2008 is expected to be supported by women's singles players Russian glamour girl, Maria Sharapova, no. 1 in the world, Belgian Justine Henin, the defending champion, Serena Williams and her sister, Venus and one of the rising stars of the game, Jelena Jankovic – to name but a few.

Henin returns to this year's event following her withdrawal from the Australian Open 2007 for personal reasons. Although she is expected to be a dominant contender, both Williams' sisters and the 'dark horse', Jankovic, are looking in awesome form.

Although Sharapova had a very good 2007 Australian Open – she was runner-up to the title - she has not impressed of late. Her performance at the last Grand Slam event of 2007, the US Open, was anything but inspiring! It would, however, be remiss to write off the svelte Russian, as she certainly has the talent to compete at the highest level.

With the return of Henin, the Australian Open 2008 is not as open to women's tennis players as it was in 2007. She holds 7 Grand Slam titles and is the top money earner on the women's professional circuit, but all other contenders have a valid chance of lifting the Daphne Akhurst Trophy.
