Venus Williams Profile

Venus Williams hasn't enjoyed much success at the Australian Open. While the elder Williams sister can boast a trophy cabinet including over a dozen singles and doubles Grand Slam titles, she has never managed to go all the way in Melbourne.

  • In 2002 Venus managed to get as far as the quarterfinals, before bowing out of the event.
  • Sister, Serena, beat her convincingly at the Australian Open 2003 final, in three sets.
  • In 2004 Venus was seeded no. 3 for the tournament, but lost to Lisa Raymond in the third round.
  • Alicia Molik was her nemesis at the 2005 event, knocking Venus out in the fourth round.
  • In 2006 Venus Williams lost in the first round to Tszvetana Pironkova 2-6, 6-0, 9-7.
  • She withdrew from the 2007 Open due to a recurring wrist injury.
  • Williams finally reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open again in 2008, but was defeated by Ana Ivanovic.

Williams' most recent Grand Slam success was on grass at Wimbledon. Venus, seeded 7th for the tournament, clinched her fifth Wimbledon title by defeating sister Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in the final. Venus Williams went on to end the 2008 Grand Slam season with a quarterfinal defeat to Serena at the US Open.

While Venus Williams continued to enjoy grand slam success in the doubles department in 2009, winning the 2009 Australian Open women's doubles title alongside Serena, she has commenced a slow slide down the women's singles rankings and appears unlikely to lift another Grand Slam singles title in her career. The 2010 Australian Open is likely to be Venus's last real chance to prove her critics wrong and claim her first title in Melbourne.
