Andy Roddick Profile

American Andy Roddick has been labeled the "one slam wonder" by armchair critics due to his failure to build on his success at the 2003 US Open.

Andy Roddick of the USA celebrates winning a point during his semi-final match against Roger Federer of Switzerland on day eleven of the Australian Open 2007 Many of Roddick's fans believe that being born into the same generation as the likes of Roger Federer has been Roddick's downfall. This was clearly demonstrated at the 2009 Wimbledon final, where an exhausted Roddick lost an epic 5 set battle to the Swiss legend.

Roddick is primarily known for his powerhouse serves and currently holds the record for the fastest serve in professional tennis, recorded at a sizzling 155mph. The American is something of a permanent fixture in the top 10 of the ATP World Rankings and has shown a marked improvement since Connors joined his entourage as a coach in mid-2006.

In the early stages of his tennis career, Roddick showed great talent and in 2003, at the age of 21, he became the last person other than Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer to secure the World No.1 ranking. Soon thereafter Roddick appeared to lose his way, and when he exited the Australian Open 2006 in the fourth round was roundly condemned for a lack of commitment.

Although he relies heavily on his service game, Roddick is said to have one of the best forehands in world tennis. He is an offensive baseliner, but occasionally will use the serve and volley tactic on both his serves in an effort to surprise his opponent. With the help of Connors, Roddick has attempted to remedy his two-handed backhand and volley, which have let him down in the past.
