Andy Roddick - Australian Open Men's Tennis Players
American Andy Roddick has been labeled the "one slam wonder" by armchair critics, but with the inclusion of the legendary Jimmy Connors as coach, he is set to take on the biggest and best of the Australian Open 2008 men's tennis players.
Roddick
has, to date, only claimed one Grand Slam title - the US Open in 2003. He, like
so many other talented players, has struggled against the dominance of
champions like Roger Federer, who has spoilt the
tall American's chances by defeating him in five semifinals or finals of a Grand
Slam event.
Roddick is primarily known for his powerhouse serves and currently holds the record for the fastest serve in professional tennis, recorded at a sizzling 155mph. He is ranked no. 5 in the ATP World Rankings and has shown a marked improvement since Connors joined his entourage in mid-2006.
In the early stages of his tennis career, Roddick showed great talent and in 2003, at the age of 21, he was ranked World No.1. He seemed to lose his way, however, and when he exited the Australian Open 2006 in the fourth round, he was roundly criticised by commentators and analysts alike for his commitment to the game and whether he had the ability to play at the highest level.
Although he relies heavily on his service game, Roddick is said to have one of the best forehands in world tennis. He is an offensive baseliner, but occasionally will use the serve and volley tactic on both his serves in an effort to surprise his opponent. With the help of Connors, Roddick has attempted to remedy his two-handed backhand and volley, which have let him down in the past.
All in all, Andy Roddick looks to be a more rounded Australian Open 2008 men's tennis player, and although he is not the fastest man in world tennis, he is becoming increasingly more adept at covering the court and has had more success in reaching the shots that used to elude him in the past.
