2005 Australian Open Tennis Champions

Men's Singles

Russian Marat Safin became a 2005 Australian Open Tennis champion by beating homeboy Lleyton Hewitt in four sets to claim the men's singles title 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. After making a dreadful start, Safin quickly lost the first set, opening the door for the Australian, who was aiming at becoming the first local to win the title since 1976. The Russian fought back and with the help of some power serves, he managed to dominate Hewitt in two hours 45 minutes. Hewitt paid tribute to the 'awesome' Safin, saying, "Some of his hitting from the back of the court at the end of the 3rd set and all of the 4th was incredible!"

Women's Singles

An injured Serena Williams made a remarkable comeback to defeat fellow American, Lindsay Davenport 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to claim her second Australian Open tennis champion's crown. The 2003 champion had a rib injury, which almost forced her to retire from the match. She quickly dropped the first set, but seemed to be able to overcome her handicap and went on to trounce Davenport in the final two set, claiming her 7th Grand Slam title.

Men's Doubles

Zimbabweans Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett caused an upset at the 2005 Australian Open men's doubles final when they beat second seeds, Bob and Mike Bryan in 2 sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Mixed Doubles

Australians Scott Draper and Samantha Stosur thrilled the home crowd by defeating fourth seeds Kevin Ullyet and Liezel Huber in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 to become the 2005 Australian Open tennis champions of the mixed doubles. Draper had quite a day; on the morning of the final he played his first professional golf event, and then went on to Melbourne Park where he grabbed the title! It was a week the patriotic crowd would not easily forget - earlier fellow Aussie, Alicia Molik, took the women's doubles title with her partner, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Lleyton Hewitt put up a good fight in the final of the men's singles, although he was overcome by Marat Safin.
