Men's Singles

Andre Agassi of the US hits a backhand return in his loss to Pete Sampras in the final of the Kooyong International played in Melbourne, 12 January 2002 Andre Agassi proves he rules men's tennis when he won a bruising, but artistic Australian Open final against Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The American claimed his second Australian Open and sixth Grand Slam title with the convincing win. "There's no feeling like it. It feels to me like the same thing as winning the lottery for everyone else,"' he said with a salute and a smile to his girlfriend Steffi Graf. In the previous seven months he had won the French, US and Australian Opens and finished runner-up at Wimbledon. Agassi, the first player to reach four straight major finals since Rod Laver won the Grand Slam in 1969, pushed his career earnings to nearly $20 million with the $485 000 winner's prize.

Women's Singles

American Lindsay Davenport ended Martina Hingis' three-year stranglehold on the Australian Open by beating the 19-year-old Swiss in 1 hour and 5 minutes in two sets – 6-1, 7-5. Davenport added 2000 Australian Open tennis winner to her Grand Slam titles of Wimbledon in 1999 and the US Open in 1998. The then 23-year-old only needed to win on the clay courts of Roland Garros to complete a rare career Grand Slam.

Men's Doubles

American Rick Leach and partner Ellis Ferreira beat Andrew Kratzmann and Wayne Black in a punishing five-set final 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 18-16. They then became the undisputed 2000 Australian Open tennis winners in the men's doubles format.  The American claimed his fifth Grand Slam doubles title, while South African partner, Ferreira, collected his first.

Women's Doubles

Martina Hingis put on a bad show of sportsmanship when she refused to address spectators at the Australian Open, after she and doubles partner Mary Pierce lost the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs. Her reaction angered her opponents. "All she kept telling me was how bad she had played. How about a little credit as well," a visibly angry Stubbs said. Hingis has already taken the doubles title at the Australian Open on three occasions with different partners.

Mixed Doubles

Rennae Stubbs teamed up with Jared Palmer to emerge as 2000 Australian Open tennis winners in the mixed doubles final against Australian legend Todd Woodbridge and feisty Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. The 28-year-old local girl had earlier lifted the women's doubles title as well. They beat the 1993 Australian Open mixed doubles champions 7-5, 7-6 (3).
